My personal mental performance coach showed me the importance of having a strong mental game. Together we focused on developing a mental training routine that helped me reach peak performance game in and game out. Through reflection and discussion, I developed a better understanding of my game, and I was able to sharpen my mental skills. With more focus on my mental game, I became more confident and consistent with my play. Any athlete that wants to elevate their game to the next level needs to work on their mental game, and working with a mental performance consultant can help them with that!
I must admit that at first I was skeptical about mental training and what it would bring to our team. However, in the first meeting with the mental performance consultant I was convinced to have an open mind and judge for myself after a trial period. It didn't take long to see the results and we brought on board the MPC to work with our Western women's hockey team in my time as the head coach of the team. Working with a team MPC brought many positive changes to our team: One was enhancing team confidence; the second was a focus on process vs. outcomes; and the third was gaining personal support to help me become a better coach.
My main goal was to become a National competitive skater and eventually go to the Olympics. Working with a mental performance consultant, I learned to focus on the important parts of my jumps and on the things that I could control. I also learned imagery skills; the more I visualized what I needed to do, the more confident I became and the better I performed. I learned that it's OK to make mistakes and it's ok to fall; now I have the mindset skills to just get right back up and keep trying. I have learned that in sport you will always encounter road blocks; it's how you deal with them that will help you get through it. The most important lesson: If I truly believe in myself, I can and will accomplish anything!
Working with a mental performance coach with a vast experience and knowledge of mental skills training as an athlete, coach, and consultant was a valuable resource for our team in preparation for National Championships. Using of unique analogies to explain mental skills allowed the athletes to develop and create their own mental skills repertoire. In fact, by the end of the summer the athletes had been exposed to so many different strategies as a team that each athlete had developed their own mental skills routine and were aware of which strategies were most effective for them. The end result was a more unified, focused, and well-rounded team able to adapt to various situations/issues.
I really started to see a difference in both my game and attitude once I started working with a mental performance coach. My MPC helped me be aware of patterns that had developed, and the program that was set out for me was extremely easy to follow. The techniques that I was taught during my sessions are now a part of my everyday life on and off the golf course. I felt very mentally ready for competition and practice the more and more we worked together.
My experience working with a mental performance consultant was through a workshop presentation delivered to my professional association. I have described to others my experience of the presentation like this: It was as if someone had opened a door in my mind and allowed fresh winds to blow out all the cobwebs. As a physical therapist, I returned to my clients invigorated and inspired and more prepared to allow my clients to make an emotional investment in their own well being. I would like to thank you for opening that door.
My Mental performance coach taught me how to be mentally and physically strong as an athlete. I learned how to focus on the task at hand and to be comfortable mentally during stressful times on the field. I also learned how to use imagery, which enhanced my performance through my increased self-confidence. Learning about the mental game in a one-on-one personalized setting was a key to my performance success on the international stage.
Working on my mental game with a mental performance consultant was very beneficial for me both on and off the ice. We were approaching the end of the regular season and gearing up for the playoffs, and I had been going through a slump where I felt I wasn't playing as well as I could (as a player I put a lot of pressure on myself to play well). I started working with the MPC and right away noticed a change in my play. We worked together for a few months during which time I learned how to use imagery before, during, and after games and even practices. I also learned to focus on the things you can control and not worry about what you can't control. Once I started focussing on what I could control it made the game a lot easier. I began playing my best hockey of the season because I had the right mind set going into every game and practice.
As the captain of the Women's 7s National Rugby Team I had added responsibilities and stresses to lead the team and also perform well. I used many of the mental skills techniques taught to us by our mental performance coach to help me concentrate and focus come game time. The techniques were useful in application and the mental imagery helped me envision what I wanted to achieve on the field and more importantly what I wanted to get from those experiences. To this day I still use some of the tools the MPC taught me and I apply them to my every day life.
When I started working with a personal mental performance coach I quickly experienced huge improvements in my game. The MPC helped me manage my competition anxiety, which was really affecting my game. My confidence got stronger through the various exercises and techniques that I learned, and this not only helped me on the court but in the classroom as well. My work with the mental performance coach helped me turn the stress of competition into gaining a winning edge; I learned that my mental game is just as important as my physical game.
As head coach of competitive hockey team, I was looking for results, and with the help of a Mental Performance Consultant, that's exactly what we received. With the mental skills in place helping us with adversity and allowing us to believe in ourselves, we changed our attitude in all concepts. Games, practices and everyday living skills were adjusted; the players learned very quickly what they individually brought to the team. All the adjustments and steps that we developed with our team MPC allowed our team to achieve our common goals in only one season.
I worked with our team's mental performance consultant for about 5 years while on the National Team. My teammates and I learned and developed many skills, one of the most important being how to mentally prepare before, during, and after rugby matches. We also learned how to develop imagery skills that I ended up using before every game I played. I know the things that I have learned from working with a mental performance consultant guided me into the player that I became and were very influential in my rugby career.
Once I began to work with a mental performance consultant I made some big improvements in my skating. My MPC helped me conquer my fear of landing a jump that I had injured myself on the previous year. The imagery we did really helped me achieve my goals and take control of my skating, and the MPC also helped me to stay calm before and during competitions. It was a great experience!
I wanted to get some strategies to focus on the positives and improve my game and so I began working with a Mental Performance Consultant. We worked together on and off for many years and I learned a lot of different skills and strategies during that time. Overall, I was able to focus on the parts of the game that I could control and not to worry about the rest. For example, one of the key strategies I developed was to take a few minutes to write about my strengths as a hockey player before every game. This simple strategy helped me focus on the game and feel more confident because I was focused more on what I can do rather than what I couldn't.
I started working with a mental performance consultant in the hopes of finding my ideal performance state and to learn how to focus on just my game and not be distracted by things I cannot control. Because of the unpredictable results of competitive sports, you are constantly put in positions where things don't go as planned, and it is easy to lose your confidence and get down on yourself. Through my work with the MPC, I was introduced to imagery, breathing techniques and self-evaluation tools that have helped me improve my performance, learn from my mistakes and be much more resilient. Once I started using these techniques I noticed I enjoyed the whole sport experience so much more and found it a lot less stressful. I used the tools provided by my MPC in many different environments; I learned how to go about training the mental aspects of my game.
Before I started working with my mental performance coach I had a lack in confidence. I was easily frustrated when it came to sports and I did not know how to let go of my mistakes. By working directly with my MPC I was able to develop strategies and tools to learn from my mistakes and I found the self-belief that I really can do anything if I focus and put my mind to it. The MPC also helped me greatly with my school and social life. Working with my MPC helped me become a better athlete and person.
Following a serious injury and multiple surgeries, I worked closely with a mental performance consultant to help me develop a personal and comprehensive mental imagery program to deal with the setback I was facing. My work with the MPC significantly contributed to my rehabilitation progress by converting mental strength into physical strength. I felt supported and empowered and I was provided with the imagery tools I needed. The mental exercises not only allowed me to effectively control my pain, but I am also confident that they shortened my recovery time. Without her support, I would not have been able to return to the field and confidently play the way I have: at the peak of my performance and mentally stronger than ever.
